Francisca Duran: Research garden: a compendium of lost moments (2023)
”In Francisca Duran: Research garden: a compendium of lost moments, the experimental media artist takes her analog film practice away from the screen and creates a multisensory installation centred on plant-based images. Meticulous and dreamy, the interactive exhibition includes wiry film flower sculptures sprouting from local soil, cascading film test strips on a large light table, dangling digital prints of enlarged film fragments on walls, a collection of optic objects for our viewing pleasure, and in the midst of it all, a 16mm film projector plays on loop her most recent piece, Compendium (2023).” (From the curatorial essay by Lesley Loksi Chan)

Drawing upon the shapes, colours and textures of the unwanted plants growing in Kensington Market, these works consider the complications and contradictions of archiving, human and other-than-human entanglements, and the visual strata of the places we call home.

These site specific pieces belong to a series of enlarged photo-objects that include contact-prints and phytograms created by the exposure of 16mm film overlaid with plant material and dried for hours in direct sunlight. The film was processed on site at the 2018 Independent Imaging Retreat (Film Farm) using organic developer made from plant phenols or polyphenols, lake water, washing soda and vitamin-c.

Exhibited at: TIFF Bell Lightbox, Film Reference Library, June 25 – July 19, 2019 https://www.tiff.net/events/film-farm-25-years-of-the-independent-imaging-retreat
